 Man of the Woods,


Boy have you pushed yourself this year. You have:

~ Been the keynote youth speaker at the Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner, where you had to write and give a speech. 

~ In the same night passed your driver's permit exam and had your Eagle Project approved.

~ Spent 2 weeks at the Summit with 15,000 other Scouts from all over country. (Sorry most of the photos are from that trip. Glad I got to go with you, even though we hardly saw each other.)

~ Worked on staff at Camp Roosevelt.

~ Completed some difficult climbing routes at the gym. One of those routes you were the third person to complete it after months of practice.

~ Competed in International Rubik's Cube competitions. Of which you came in 16th or better in all the categories' you competed in.

~ Taken on the role of the Order of the Arrow Chapter Chief for Central Highlands.


Nobody can ever accuse you of being lazy. You not only push yourself to grow but you inspire others to do the same for themselves. In fact sometimes I think you focus on the next challenge that you forget to rest and be still. My prayer for you this year is that you learn to wait quietly for the Lord because He alone is your salvation (Psalm 62). Also I hope that you remember how good it is to be near God (Psalm 73:28), and that He is the one you goes before you (Deuteronomy 31:8). I am proud of the man you are and I look forward to seeing how you grow over the next year. I love you.

Hey Baby! -- That's what I say to you all the time.  Last night when you on your way to bed you gave me a hug and said, "night baby"... Your words are such gifts to me.  This fall will mark two years of speech therapy.  You have come so far. I love the way you are beginning to play with words as you find new combinations to try out on us. My favorite thing about you is that when you smile your whole face lights up.  You truly are my Happy One. This past year you have grown up so much.  Physically you are a giant. My guess is that you will be the biggest brother when you reach adulthood. It has been a long time since we've had any feeding issues.  The only thing you have left to learn is that if your in the middle of chewing something and you see something better you can swallow what you are chewing, you do not have to spit it out to get the next thing.  Man of the Woods, You've grown four shoe sizes and at least that many inches since I last wrote to you. Your voice has deepened and you're about to spend the summer as a CIT at camp. While everybody has noticed your physical changes I'm most impressed with how your character has begun standing out.  A lot has happened this year. None of us thought we'd move the day after Christmas and if we did we all thought it would be just a town or two over, not three states away. You didn’t have much time to adjust to all the changes. In your chill Man of the Woods way you rolled with it and even conquered. You could have used this move to allow yourself to become bitter and resentful, but you didn’t. Instead you talked with us and listened. You saw that this was hard on all of us, you showed compassion and helped build us up as a family, understanding we were in this together.  You kept working towards your scouting goals despite the fact that we still haven’t found a troop here....

When we were first married we vowed to continue dating at least weekly, no matter what. We were in love, and it was easy... until we became parents! If it seemed difficult when our boys were young, we found the real challenge came when our oldest started school. Trying to get a date in after work and school, while also making sure our boys got supper and enough sleep, to say nothing of trying not to break the bank on a sitter and a date proved almost impossible. However, going without a date eventually led to us bickering with each other until someone would finally ask, “When was our last date?” Once, after a frustrating evening, we tried to remember what we enjoyed doing together before we became parents... and could we still do it now? Immediately we had our answer: board games. It’s how we passed time during our engagement, honeymoon, vacations, and pregnancies. At one point we even kept a game in the car for unexpected waiting.
